The day after Thanksgiving I haul all my Christmas stuff out & start decking the house out. No matter how hungover I am from my glutenous eating the day before, I always have the energy to pull out all the boxes of Christmas decor from closets. The soft glow of my tree lite up at night is such a comforting sight. It stirs up the little kid in you…no matter how deep and just makes you sing silly Christmas songs & let go just a bit.
Ever since I can remember, candy canes on the Christmas tree just sparked something in me. Maybe it was because I would hide a bunch of candy canes from my brother in the bottom branches of the tree. Maybe it was that we were only allowed one candy cane a day & I couldn’t wait to get home from school, unwrap that candy cane, suck on it until it was sharp….then poke my brother with it. I know, I was…still am, the sweetest sister. This year when I hung candy canes on the tree with Micah, I couldn’t help but wonder what he would take away from our holiday traditions. I take comfort in knowing he will have memories of us watching endless loops of Christmas cartoons & movies, humming Marcos Witt while baking cookies and maybe he’ll do the same things with his children one day.
